Jan. 31 Reading and Music at Bluestockings

Thinking about what to do this weekend? This Saturday Bob Proehl, author of the latest 33 1/3 release Flying Burrito Brother's Gilded Palace of Sin, will be reading at Bluestockings on the Lower East Side. Fine music will also be provided by Yer Sweet Chimneys and City Center. This event should be a lot of fun- Bluestockings is a bookstore/activist center and they have events almost every night.

A gentle newsflash

I've now read around 450 of the proposals, so only another 150 to go. At this stage, it's looking like the shortlist will consist of around 140 possible books... Your patience is greatly appreciated. Once we've got the shortlist finalized, we'll send an email to all those who *didn't* make the cut, and then we'll post the remainining contenders on here. I suspect it'll be another couple of weeks.

In the meantime, if you like sunshine, you ought to love this:

My wife was given one for Christmas, and it's really a splendid thing. Sunlight, in a jar. Sunshine on a rainy day. And so on.

Announcing Vol. 61: Flying Burrito Brothers, Gilded Palace of Sin

Amidst the mayhem of proposals, we must not forget that we're still publishing some actual, proper, wonderfully readable books. Coming very shortly are the volumes on Wire's Pink Flag and Big Star's Radio City, but today let's celebrate Bob Proehl's telling of the story behind The Gilded Palace of Sin.

Here's the back cover copy from Bob's book...

***

The Burritos wanted country music that breathed and bled, that was relevant and vital. To create it, they injected the country of the past with everything at hand, anything they could find that mattered to them. They stuffed it full of club girls and pot and dead Kennedys and soul and hippies and riots and rhinestones, crossing their fingers and hoping it would pop, dazzling audiences as sure as Operation Rolling Thunder's bombing of North Vietnam or the sunburst on the back of Chris Hillman's Nudie suit.

Rising from the rubble of the Byrds at the end of the sixties, the short-lived Flying Burrito Brothers created an extraordinary, pioneering country rock album. The Gilded Palace of Sin fused elements of country, R&B, and rock, in a way that was years ahead of its time. Delving into issues of race, politics, and fashion that inform the album, Bob Proehl traces the story of Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman's collaboration from South Africa to Altamont, shining a light on an album that defied convention and laid the groundwork for subsequent decades of alternative country music.

Bob Proehl is a DJ, writer, and owner of No Radio Records, an independent record store and label. He is the country music columnist for PopMatters.com and resides in Ithaca, NY.

Marquee Moon, etc

A commenter asked about the two proposals for writing on Television's Marquee Moon album. The proposals are perfectly valid. We did, indeed, have two previous writers under contract to write a Marquee Moon book for the series, but neither projects came to fruition, for differing reasons.

Meanwhile, I'm making good progress reading the proposals. Totally randomly, a couple of my favourite sentences so far:

"(I'm not sure if you've heard, but he's kind of an egomaniac.)"

and

"I have a strange fascination with the 1954 Hungarian World Cup football team, because communist Hungary nationalised the football teams and then conscripted all the best players into the army so they could play together every week, and that made Hungarian football very odd, and very good, for about ten years."

For the Mike Watt fanatic in all of us

So for those of you who joined us at Barbes for the last installment of the 33 1/3 Multimedia Reading Series, you'll remember that we had a few technical difficulties and couldn't show all of the cool visual stuff that the Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime author Michael Fournier brought to share with us. But never fear- thanks to the glory of the internet, you can experience it now, in the comfort of your own home or office.

In the pre-history department, I think the MC5's attitude, as well as their music, was a precursor to the Minutemen. This clip is from 1970:

This is a recently resurfaced clip -- it was on IRS' "The Cutting Edge" in 1985, eight months before D. boon died in a van accident:

Michael Fournier also read from his new publication Behind The Music with Bullshit Wolf. Here's an brief excerpt for those who missed it:

People ask me that a lot. We chose the name because wolves are such elegant creatures, you know? They’re predators. They’re wild. They roam the forest and don’t take no for an answer. Of all the animals, the wolf scares humans the most. Packs of wolves just slaughter cows, and wolves come into fields and destroy corn and crops like it’s no big deal. I don’t know if you know this, but the price of ethanol has gone up because wolves are destroying all the corn in the Midwest. It’s a fact. Now, wolves are dangerous, but they’re also beautiful. The way they take care of their cubs. The way they take care of human babies. When a little kid is discovered that was raised by wolves, that’s special. That person is a special, special person. They’re thinking the same things that we are, but they’re thinking in a language that only a few humans understand. They’re thinking in wolf. So, while I might think “I’m going to go to the store to buy some smokes,” a child raised by wolves might think “rooooaaaaooooaaaarr.” But I do want to say that even though I’m a smoker, children, whether they were raised by wolves or not, shouldn’t be smoking. It’s a nasty habit. And kids, say no to drugs.

To get the entire work (it's $2ppd), or to find out more about Cabildo Press, email cabildopress@gmail.com

Also finally, here's a link to Michael's Top 2008 Music List on Mobtown Shank. Some good stuff on there.

Thanks for everyone who came out! The next installment of the series is going to be Sunday, March 1st on Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures by Chris Ott. 7pm Barbes FREE

A small update

Just a quick one... This has come up a few times in the comments to the previous post - while we love reading the requests, shout-outs, wishlists, plugs, and Foxisms, they don't influence the decision-making process in any way. (OK maybe they do, but only very very slightly!)

The whole shebang would be an awful lot simpler if all of the proposals had the exact same level of quality, but they don't. They vary, a lot. So are we going purely on quality, then? Well, no. Because if the 20 most brilliant proposals are all for indie-rock albums of the last decade, that would throw the series off balance. There are compromises involved, and trade-offs. You can't please everyone all of the time. Life isn't fair. Etc, etc.

Anyhow, the main thing is, it's fun! I read the first 25 proposals last night, and just want to thank everyone, again, for sending these in.

FURTHER UPDATE: Of the 597 proposals, 75 were written by women - 12.5%, pretty much.

FURTHER FURTHER UPDATE: I've read 90 of the proposals so far, and 24 have made their way into my "shortlist" file. If the quality keeps going at this rate, that list won't be quite as short as I'd hoped...(Note: we're not informing anyone of any decisions yet, as I'll have one more trawl through the entire lot before finalising the shortlist, just to make sure nothing gets missed.)

The Longlist

As you'll see below, we received quite a few proposals this time around. 597 by my count. (OK, by my computer's count - I can't actually go that high.) I haven't even started reading these yet, but it's tremendously exciting. A very big Thank You to everyone who sent in a proposal. Current thinking is that we'll put together a 'shortlist' of sorts, a few weeks from now, which will maybe consist of the 100 or so proposals that are still in the running. But of course this could all change as I start reading...

Make what you will of this list - a snapshot of the interests of contemporary music critics? Some cunning ploys to get a book published? Or is it just utterly random? Feel free to leave comments below, as well as ever so subtle anonymous hints that we should select your proposal :) My only comment at this stage is to note the relatively small number of proposals on albums by artists already covered in the series: I was really expecting a deluge of Dylan, Pink Floyd, Velvets, Smiths, Stones and Radiohead pitches. Instead, we get Slint, Ween, and Britney - hurrah!

Oh, and apologies if the alphabetization isn't perfect...

The New Proposals

A very happy new year to everyone, from the wintry West Midlands of England. Just about to drive to Heathrow to catch a plane back to NYC - spent most of yesterday and this morning acknowledging receipt of all the proposals that were sent in.

So, if you have not had an email of receipt yet from the "submissions33" yahoo account, please leave a comment below this posting, and we'll see if we can work out if anything slipped through the cracks.

By the end of the upcoming weekend, I'll endeavour to post a complete list of the proposals on here - in the meantime, have a great week!
